Creative Eco-Friendly Gift Wrapping Ideas

Gift wrapping can be almost as much fun as the gift itself, especially when you skip the brand-new rolls of wrapping paper and get a little creative with things you already have.

Old magazines, newspapers, paper bags and saved gift bags can all become colorful, one-of-a-kind gift wrap. It's an easy way to reuse what you have while making each present feel a little more personal.

Wrap a Gift Inside a Gift

Want to make the wrapping part of the present? Use something wearable or reusable in place of traditional paper, bows and ribbon. Your bud gets an extra surprise, and there's less wrapping to toss when the presents are opened.

Use a Belt Instead of Ribbon

Wrap a belt around a box in place of traditional ribbon. It adds color and texture to the package, and the "ribbon" becomes another gift to keep. Check out our hats, belts and scarves for inspiration.

Wrap It in a Scarf

A scarf can replace wrapping paper completely. Fold the fabric around your gift and tie the ends together for a package that's colorful, reusable and ready to wear afterward.

Try a Bandana or Headband

For smaller presents, a bandana or fabric boho headband can become part of the wrapping. Add twine or another reusable embellishment for an extra special touch.

Think Bigger With Fabric

Have a larger present? A skirt, tapestry or other piece of fabric can make wonderfully unconventional gift wrap. Fold it around the present and tie or tuck it into place. The bigger the package, the more fun you can have with it.

Get Creative With Small Gifts

Small boxes, especially jewelry gifts, are perfect for experimenting. A reusable fabric accessory, little pouch or other unexpected wrapping can turn one gift into two.

Turn Wearables Into Bows

Socks, gloves, arm warmers and other soft accessories can be folded or tied around a package to create a funky reusable bow. Browse our hippie accessories for more little gift ideas.

Make Your Own Stocking

A long sock or other soft, reusable item can double as a stocking for little presents. Fill it with a few small surprises and you've got the wrapping and gift all in one.

Reuse, Rewrap & Get Creative

Eco-friendly gift wrapping doesn't have to look plain or boring. Recycled paper, fabric, scarves and reusable accessories can make a package feel even more special while giving materials another life.

Before buying a new roll of wrapping paper, take a look around and see what you can turn into part of the gift. Sometimes the most memorable wrapping is the stuff you never expected to use.
