The best thing we can do for Earth Day is to become conscious of our Earth every day. Small lifestyle changes, from using what we already have to growing something green, can help us tread a little lighter on Mama Earth. You don’t have to change everything at once. A few thoughtful choices can grow into habits that stick.
Small Changes Add Up
Living a little greener doesn’t have to mean buying a bunch of new “eco-friendly” stuff. Often, some of the best choices start with using what you already have. Repair something instead of replacing it. Share what you don’t need. Carry a reusable bottle or bag. Wash full loads of laundry. Shop secondhand. Grow a few herbs, vegetables, or flowers if you have the space.
Our Soul Flower buds have shared plenty of ideas over the years. We gathered more of them in our Earth Day tips for treading lighter on Mother Earth.
Support Your Local Community
Shopping locally can be another way to think about the impact of what we buy. Visit a farmers market, support a neighborhood business, share garden extras with a neighbor, or see whether something you need can be found secondhand before buying it new.
Living more sustainably can be about community as much as consumption. Sharing, borrowing, repairing, growing, and passing things along can keep useful items in use longer and help us connect with the people around us.
Grow Something for Mama Earth
You don’t need a huge garden to grow something. A pot of herbs, a few flowers on a balcony, or native plants in your yard can bring a little more green into your world.
When choosing what to plant, consider native flowers that provide food and habitat for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Even a small patch of pollinator-friendly plants can become a busy little ecosystem.
Make Earth Day an Earth Year
We love Earth Day, but caring about the planet shouldn’t end on April 22. The real magic happens when a small Earth Day idea becomes something you keep doing.
Our Earth Day Every Day post has more ideas for bringing earth-friendly choices into everyday life. You can also read Celebrating Earth Year for inspiration beyond one day on the calendar.
Celebrate Earth Day Creatively
Earth Day can be creative, too. If you’re celebrating with kids, friends, or just want a little relaxing art time for yourself, download our Free Earth Day Coloring Page.
However you celebrate, start with something that feels doable. Use what you have. Waste a little less. Grow something. Share something. Learn something new. Then keep going.
Keep on keepin’ it green, buds!
