Travel With Yoga

Travel With Yoga

Sometimes life happens in unexpected, unwanted, horrific, and mentally exhausting ways. We often think we're well-equipped to handle life when everything is going well. However, when things recently turned south for me, I had to draw from past life experiences to remind myself that everything is going to be okay.

At first, when my social circle was collapsing and hurtful things were being said by people I loved, I felt like I needed to control everything. Even the weather here in Colorado seemed to be turning against me with rain, snow, and dark clouds.

However, the yogi in me kept me grounded (along with my new organic cotton skirted leggings from Soul Flower), while the backpacking traveler in me kept me optimistic. If I didn't have the tools that yoga and travel have given me, this rough patch in my life would have been much harder to navigate. Here are a few lessons that have helped me through life's rugged terrain.

Things Don't Go as Planned

You miss the train. You have to hike five more miles in the rain. You leave your map at a cute little coffee shop. Life happens. Travel teaches you to accept what you can't control. It's difficult when your plans fall apart, but you learn to adapt so you can continue enjoying the journey. Imagine life as one incredible adventure. Why spend another day stuck in frustration when there's still so much life left to experience?

Life Takes Practice Too

When someone first begins yoga, the body may feel stiff, weak, or unbalanced. But after months and years of practice, flexibility and strength begin to develop. Yoga has taught me that physical and mental growth only come through consistent practice. I rarely master a challenging pose on my first attempt—or even my hundredth. Life works the same way. Difficult situations become more manageable as we continue showing up, learning, and growing. Eventually, we find ourselves moving through life's toughest moments with greater confidence and grace.

Move Forward

As a backpacker, unexpected situations happen all the time, especially when you find yourself stranded without a place to stay. The worst thing you can do is panic. Clear thinking and staying calm often make all the difference. If you've been shaken by something in your own life, pause before reacting. Focus on your next step instead of the problem itself. Facing life's challenges with a steady mind can protect both your peace and your perspective.

Remain Dedicated to What You Love

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is continue showing up for the things that bring you joy. No matter what happens, I know I'll always have my yoga practice. Life may feel overwhelming today, but you still deserve happiness. By taking care of yourself and focusing on what truly matters to you, you refuse to let difficult circumstances define your life.

Whether you're going through a divorce, discovering a painful truth, or facing an unexpected disappointment, remember that you still have the power to choose how you move forward. Change is difficult, and it's often hard to see the good while you're in the middle of the storm. Give yourself time. Sometimes life's greatest challenges become their greatest blessings.
