The Retro Vibe of Tie-Dye

My daughter and I love all things old and interesting, and I had my eye on this property for quite some time as the perfect place to photograph. For years, the timing was never right to visit with my camera, and I worried that one day I'd drive by and find it demolished. Abandoned places have always fascinated me, and this one in particular has held my attention since I was young. My love for all things vintage started back then, and this old Volkswagen repair shop had such a classic, happy feel. It perfectly matched the hippie vibe I fell in love with at an early age. Although it closed its doors years ago, I somehow find myself loving the building even more with every crack and weathered detail.

When Soul Flower's blue tie-dye skirt arrived, I knew it needed to meet this location. It finally gave me the perfect excuse to plan the photo shoot! The skirt has such a simple silhouette, but the beautiful tie-dye pattern really stands out without being overwhelming. I've usually shied away from tie-dye myself, but I absolutely love the subtle monochromatic palette of this one. Of course I grabbed my favorite model, Marli, filled a bag with clothes and accessories, and we headed out. It was windy and cold, but we were excited to explore. The mud leading up to the building was practically quicksand, so we had to create our own obstacle course just to reach it! Once we got closer, the weather warmed up a bit and we could really take everything in. The closer we looked, the more amazing little details we discovered—children's paintings on the garage door, an old 35-cent soda machine, rusting tools, names carved into doors, and forgotten auto parts. Every little piece hinted at the memories made there over the years.

Through all the running, jumping, climbing, and mud skipping, the tie-dye skirt stayed just as soft and comfortable as your favorite T-shirt. It even worked beautifully as a dress! Normally tie-dye can be tricky to pair with other prints, but this design mixes surprisingly well with florals, stripes, and polka dots as long as you stay within the same color palette. It layers perfectly over leggings or tights for cooler weather, making it a piece you can truly wear year-round. In the summer, just pair it with a simple tee and sandals for an easy, comfortable outfit. I may just have to add another color to my closet.
