Did the pillows in our Spring/Summer 2012 catalog look familiar? Perhaps they reminded you of our tapestries and graphic T-shirts? Because that’s exactly what they were! Our bud, Karly, took our slightly damaged Soul Flower tees and tapestries and upcycled them into the most adorable pillows for our photoshoot.
It started out with a simple daydream of an amazing indoor fort with tons of pillows sprawled about. Once we had that in our heads, there was no turning back…you just can’t forget an idea that cozy! So at first we were asking each other to bring whatever couch pillows we had at home, but then Karly piped in with an even better idea – she could turn our old T-shirts into pillows!
Best part is, she says it’s easy, so you can do this very pillow upcycle in your own home!
Turn an Old T-Shirt or Tapestry Into a Pillow
The basic idea is simple: choose an old T-shirt or piece of tapestry fabric with a design you love, decide how large you want your pillow to be, measure and cut the fabric, then sew the pieces together to create your pillow cover. Add your pillow form or stuffing and finish the remaining seam.
It’s a fun way to give an old favorite another life, especially if you have a beloved graphic tee that’s too worn or damaged to wear but you just can’t bring yourself to part with.
These particular pillows were made for our 2012 photoshoot, and we loved seeing familiar Soul Flower artwork transformed into something completely new.
The designs on each of these pillows are Soul Flower originals and were hand drawn. At the time, we even gave these two one-of-a-kind pillows away to a couple of lucky Soul Flower buds!
Give an Old Favorite a New Life
We still love the idea behind this old photoshoot. Clothing doesn’t have to become trash just because it can’t be worn anymore. A favorite tee can become a pillow, fabric scraps can become part of another project, and an old textile can find an entirely new purpose with a little creativity.
