Meet Peggy, Soul Flower Co-Founder

My name is Peggy, I live & virtually work in my home town, Des Moines IA. I spend most of my work days on my computer designing clothing, bits of our website & finding cool, new things for Soulflower. When I am not working, I love hanging out with my family (2 kids,a cat & a husband, Mike, who is also my biz partner). My favorites beyond work are hanging with my kiddles, great food (cooking), good books, and live music.

Here is a link to an article about me that just ran in our local paper – you can read a bit about me & about soul-flower.com.

My Favorite Band: Michael Franti & Spearhead.
My Favorite Soul Flower find: My Zoey Wrap Dress with the green mandalas. Got it over a year ago & still wear it all the time!

We’re gonna rock on to Electric Avenue…

I love these Mudmee Tie-Dye pants – Hey there friends! It’s Loudog in my Electric Avenue Mudmee Pants! First off, I love any tye-dye! I spend lots of time on my own tye dying here at my home in Tennessee. Even with lots of practice and patterns, you can never be 100 percent sure on what your going to get once the product is washed out and ready to dry. When i saw these pants i had to have them. The description on Soul Flower said, “colors may vary” and I knew this to be true. So I was excited to see what mine would look like.

Second of all, due to the fact that I am a full figured chick, getting to dress the way I want can be a challenge. Most cute or cool clothes come in med, small, and extra small. So it can be very discouraging when going to department stores that cater to only youth sizes. Just this month, Soul Flower added a plus size section for customers (see it here). When I saw the measurements on the pants, knowing mine, I knew they would be a sure fit. btw, they do also offer these hip pants in a small/med too 🙂 Once I received mine, I put them on immediately! They fit great and the colors were pure, and they are made with really good dye’s. My colors were dark greens, blues, rich purple, and hints of orange and a bit of yellow. I didn’t want to take them off.

I go to lots of festivals and I am also a part of a large community of hula hoopers . Even though I love to wear skirts, It’s nearly impossible for me to hoop in one. These pants are so cool tho, they literally look like you’re wearing a skirt standing still. The bottom measurements of each pant leg have a 25″ flair! But as the hoop flies around, for leg tricks, the pants give me the freedom to move with perfect flow. If I could rename the pants, I would name them Flow Pants. Cause when I wear them I feel totally “with the flow”. Oh & I do like that even though I ordered the pants in the largest size, they weren’t too long on me. I am a very satisfied customer! Thanks again, Soulflower. -Loudog
From Your Soul-Flower Buds: We are also including a picture of the Mudmee Tie Dye Electric Avenue pants from our site here so you can see how the colors vary a bit. One of the super cool things about Mudmee tiedye is the tie dye technique because it has a black base (versus white base as you see with a lot of tie dye). The black helps to bring out a lot of the vibrance in the other colors of the pants. You can see from these pictures that they are always very different but also always very cool, bright, fun & funky. Just the way we like it!

Meet Lourenda of the Soul-Flower.com Karma Krewe

When we created the Karma Krewe, Lourenda, aka LouDog, was at the top of our list of customers we should ask to be on our street team – she has been buying from us for years, and probably more kind threads than any other customer. And not just that, she calls & emails us with positive messages all the time. Thanks for that LouDog! Here she is:

My name is Lourenda C. I was born and raised in St.Pete, FL. I currently live in Clarksville, TN, because i was stationed here due to the Army. My husband and I will be returning to St.Pete this year.

Giving Back

campcourageous - Giving BackBlog Image

Here are Soul Flower we do our best to keep the vibe going. We support environmental organizations who are working hard to reverse the harsh effects man has had on the world. We also believe in supporting local community – as an internet shop, it is hard to focus on what is local, as our customers are all over the world. But our day to day lives, at least those of Mike & Peggy, the founders of Soul Flower, find us in Des Moines IA, a great city with many great organizations that help to make our community & world a better place.

In 2009, we continued our efforts with the
Arbor Day Foundation to plant two trees for every one that we use in our catalog production. This is an effort we proudly began in 2008 and continued this year. We helped with an amazing project to plant 125,000 total longleaf pine trees in the Manchester State Forest in South Carolina.

Also in 2009, Soul Flower supported the the Des Moines Music Coalition (DMMC) in producing the 8035 Festival in Des Moines, IA. We continue to support Camp Courageous (also located in Iowa) by donating enuf to send 8 kids to the camp in 2009. (Camp Courageous works with disabled children and adults to build self-esteem through an awesome camp experience – please check them out if you get a chance.) We continue our support of the Iowa Food Bank. We began working with a new organization this year as well called After School Arts Program (ASAP). We realize there are many great organizations out there, so please let us know if you have a favorite you would like to see us support.

In addition, we support Carbonfund.org in helping to offset Soul Flower’s carbon footprint; and we continue to expand our green practices as a company.

A few of our favorite things…

We hope you can take part in finding your faves on soul-flower.com – we will even give away a favorite this week. Simply go to our facebook fan page (http://www.facebook.com/soulflower) and post a photo & link on our wall to your favorite fall product on our website. Be sure to include a little reason why it is a fave…then on November 4th we will pick a random person who will win their favorite item. So start checking out the site – in the meantime, here are a couple of our favorite fall things to inspire you.

Blog Image NME001 - A few of our favorite things...Our first fave is this mosaic reversible skirt.

This skirt is so versitile, it is hard to know where to start…

Is it that it can be worn on either side, mosaic or black? Or possibly that you can turn down the top waistband to give it a sweet lowwaist banded look? Or how about the fact that you can roll it into a ball, throw it in your backpack & still wear it that night without a wrinkle in site? No matter how you look at this one, it is a must have for this season & beyond.

Click here to check it out.

And now our second fave, the Big Easy Tie Top.

Blog Image SOL095 - A few of our favorite things...This top is soooo soft & fun to wear. The artwork is intricate and so beautiful…when we designed this one we really struggled to name it so that y’all could tell how cool the artwork is. There is so much to see in it, it has a graffiti quality to it with a big of hieroglyphic Egyptian coolness plus the N’Awlins voodoo funkiness…maybe it is just one of those you have to see (AND FEEL) in person. So number two is the big ez tie top.

Click here to check this one out.
Trying to pick just one is the hardest part, right? So just jump on soul-flower.com, do a little window shopping & let us know your fave. That’s it, then you will have a chance to win on 11.4.09.

More Bliss: Our winner Nana Jill

Blog Image old port2 - More Bliss: Our winner Nana Jill

Thanks for all the fabulous photo entries you sent in to win a soul flower gift certificate – we had so many more than expected! It was so much fun to see everyone in their soul flower threads. We have picked a winner but we also decided, because there were so many great ones, that we are doing a CircleTee giveaway too for some of our “honorable mentions”. Watch for those pictures over the next month here on our blog.

Today, we are posting our grand prize winner, Jill. Jill & Max are pictured here in their cool threads. Here is Jill’s message she wrote with this entry.

“The attached picture is Max and me, Jill aka Nana walking in the Old Port section of Portland Maine last August, 2008. We were on vacation, visiting family and all I packed were Soul-Flower clothing items. The dress I am wearing is the very first item of clothing I got from Soul-flower. Actually, my daughter Hope Starr (Max’s mom) ordered this dress for herself and it fit me better. Since this dress, almost every article of clothing i own comes from Soul-flower. Same for Max. We love your clothing. It feels so right to me, to be wearing clothing I got from you. It fits my personality and essence, as it does for my daughter and my grandson.
Thanks for all the wonderful duds!
Jill and Max”

Meet Ruthie Rainbow (our review winner)…

We loved reading all the great reviews on our site these last couple of weeks. While they are all fun to read and so many shine, one was extra special to us, and that one is…..drum roll please…..Ruthie Rainbow. Ruthie’s mama, Georgia, wrote a great review of the Rainbow Peace Skirt. And sent a couple of adorable pictures of her little rainbow loving toddler, Ruthie. Here is the review. Thanks Georgia, your gift certificate is on the way!!! And thanks too to everyone who participated. Watch for another contest out here by the end of the week.

Ruthie’s Magic Rainbow Skirt by our bud Georgia
Blog Image rainbow+ruthie - Meet Ruthie Rainbow (our review winner)...“My little girl “Ruthie Rainbow” is full of magic, creativity, and imagination. At 3, she is strong-willed in her desire to create her own styles each morning, before we head out the door at 7 am. Often, she wakes up, groggily rubbing her eyes & announcing “I need to wear rainbow clothes”. When I showed her this skirt online, she told me, “this is perfect” and when it arrived in the mail, she hugged it to her chest and vowed, “I will wear this FOREVER”. Now, it is a struggle to get her to wear anything else! How perfect that there was one for her twirly-whirly mama too! We both wore this skirt to the CD release party of our Kid’s Band “Spiral Up Kids” and twirled on the dance floor. Our outfits brought many smiles and compliments and we both felt so special in our rainbow skirts. We just LOVE them! Thank you Soul-flower for designing clothing feels so good & let’s your true spirit shine through! These rainbow skirts are not only beautiful but magical too! (I guess we’ll need one in the next size too, as my Ruthie Rainbow is growing up on me, before my eyes!)”

Treehugging Karma

Blog Image

Here at Soul Flower we are working hard to create some positive karma for the holidaze.
We have joined forces with the Arbor Day Foundation to help the environment by planting more trees. This year, we started planting two trees for every one that is used in our catalog production. It makes sense to replenish what has been taken, and this is just one step in a series of steps we are taking to help the environment. Read more about eco green here.
And here is a little karma for your pocketbook – we’re offering Free Priority Mail Shipping on all orders over $50 between now and Dec.15th 2008. That is $7.95 off of your order total, to receive it, just enter the coupon code TREEHUGGER when you are checking out.

Three Songs

Hi friends –
It’s 3:30am and it’s the crickets and me that appear to be the only ones up right now. I really don’t mind, it’s a great time to let the thoughts just pass through my head. However, there’s this one thought that just won’t let, go so here I am writing…

Being in an introspective mood, this idea came to mind to try and define myself via music. Specifically, if you could pick three songs that define who you are what would they be? I’d imagine that over the course of several years the songs would change as your circumstances in life change – but wouldn’t it be insightful if you could keep a list that from time to time you could go back and reflect on?

So, here I go – if you feel like sharing your list feel free – this is an exercise that hopefully will bring you closer to who you are – a reflection in the mirror type thing. Anyways, here’s my list:

Song #1 is Bruce Cockburn’s Wondering Where the Lions Are. This song has always puts me in a good mood and it’s always had this sort of spiritual, uplifting, the world can’t get me down kind of message that I think is great. This song has been on my list all along and I don’t really see that changing.
lyrics

Song #2 is John Lennon’s Watching the Wheels:
This song is a reminder to me to live my life the way I see fit, and not get caught up with what others are thinking. I need to be reminded from time to time – we’re not hamsters on a wheel or cogs in a machine. Jump off, reflect, take a break, blaze a trail, just be…

lyrics

The third song is Bob Dylan’s It’s Alright Ma (I’m only Bleeding). To me, this is probably the yang to Bruce Cocburn’s Wondering Where the Lions Are. There’s as much darkness as there is light (in this world) – it’s how we choose to deal with it that defines us. Not everything in this song I relate to – but to me it’s like Nirvana’s Teen Spirit. It’s angst, rage, cynicism – but it’s also saying hey, I’m going to be okay.
lyrics

So, there you have it – probably know more about me now than you care to but that’s where I’m at right now. ‘It’s alright ma – I can make it!’
Peace and positive vibes to you all. I can’t believe it – I just finished this at 4:20 – some things never change I guess.

-Mike

Welcome to Our Warehouse (and meet Chad)

Perhaps some of you have recently been sitting around a summer campfire, wearing your favorite Soulflower shirt and wondering, “What’s going on at Soulflower?” “What sort of place did these great duds that I am wearing come from?” Anyone? Well, even if not, here is your chance for a little behind the scenes tour of our warehouse.

Our “warehouse” is in St Paul Minnesota, and sure, its full of boxes, tape, shelves, and computers just like any warehouse. After that though, it diverges a bit from what you might normally expect. Hardly a minute passes during the day without music playing throughout the place, and we try to keep up a laid back atmosphere. (except during the catalog rush of course)

racks copy - Welcome to Our Warehouse (and meet Chad)Here’s a birds eye view of the main room with all sorts of new clothing folded and sorted and ready to be sent to you! If we ever get stuck in here in a disaster, we might not be too happy eating only lip balm, but we could each wear a new shirt every day for years!

packing desk copy - Welcome to Our Warehouse (and meet Chad)This is the spot where all of our merchandise is packed up to send out to the customer. We’ve got every shape and size of new and about-to-be-reused boxes and envelopes. Plus, we have a couple of huge maps so we can check out where all you folks live. If you look close you might even see Jenn through the window answering some of your e-mails!

feedback copy - Welcome to Our Warehouse (and meet Chad)We’ve got the place decorated a little like a funky apartment. Almost every bit of wall space (that isn’t covered by racks of clothing) is covered by tapestries or concert posters. This wall, however, is reserved for some of our favorite letters and pictures from customers!

packages - Welcome to Our Warehouse (and meet Chad)By the end of any given day we have a pile of packages ready for pickup, so we send them on their way and get ready for a bunch of new orders tomorrow! Hopefully now you have an idea of what’s going on around here, Thanks for coming on a virtual tour on the world wide web!

Your warehouse bud,
-Chad

p.s. I’ve been here at Soulflower for about 4 great years, working on the site, on our operations, and on getting better goods out to you faster! All the great customers we have make it a pleasure to work here in the Soulflower warehouse.

My favorite thing to do outside of work is to go out and see live music, but I also love building things from wood, fixing up my house, golfing, biking, and playing organized whiffleball. I lived in Madison, WI for several years where I also went to school at UW, before moving here to Minneapolis. I’ve come to like Minnesota a lot, but I’ll always stay the biggest Badger fan in town. Go Bucky!
