That tipping point between the final days of spring and the very cusp of summer is a magical time full of warmth and growth. Longer days, abundant sunshine, and more greenery with each day suggests that it’s also a time of positive change.

Shedding Old Habits

Begin your process of change by taking a moment to compile a list of old habits you’re looking to shed. Thinking about ways in which you can improve your relationship with the earth, those around you, and with yourself are all great places to start.

Finding New Habits

Next take a look at your list of habits you’re hoping to get rid of and begin to think about ways to replace or improve upon them. Maybe one is using plastic or paper grocery bags and your replacement habit is reusable bags. If your old habit is having a messy kitchen, make your new habit spending an hour each week tidying up. Try to keep your new list reasonable, measurable, and achievable to set yourself up for success.

Make Changes Stick

  • Commit to a month – Studies have shown that if you’re able to do something new for 30 days, it’s much more likely to turn into a habit!
  • Connect with your buds – If your new list has anything on it that involves being social (i.e. going to yoga class, going on walks, cooking more, etc.) get a friend involved! You can both hold each other accountable.
  • List out the benefits – You’ll be much more likely to stick with something if you know why you’re doing it. If your goal is to grow your own vegetables, for example, make a list detailing why that’s important to you and all the different ways it’s better than buying your produce.

As a wife, full-time employee, and full-time graduate student, making time for self-care is a challenge. Simple things, like getting enough sleep, often fall by the wayside as I attempt to meet deadlines and be present in my marriage. This is not a sustainable way to live! This spring, I hope to recommit to self-care rituals that I have let slide, such as getting up a bit earlier to meditate (which means getting to bed a bit earlier instead of idly checking social media), taking long baths, cooking healthy meals for myself and my husband, and taking the time for mini-rituals and intention setting on full moons. I also hope to be kinder to myself when I don’t accomplish every item on my “to-do” list in a given day if it means having a bit of time to nurture myself.

I would like to get back in the habit of keeping a gratitude journal this Spring. I started one when I was going through breast cancer. It really helped me to put positive thoughts down on paper. I think I got out of the habit when life sped up for me again after being given a “clean bill of health”. But I miss it! And I have so much to be thankful for!

Well said Ellie Brown! I too let most my “mini-rituals” fall by the wayside due to work, relationships and keeping a household. Getting enough sleep is one major issue I have and am still working on. Meditation and yoga are key. I’ve been drinking nothing but lemon water for close to three weeks now to help replace sugary drinks to enhance natural energy. I definately notice the extra boost! Here’s to spending more time appreciating the small things, working on the garden, self love and peace. Namesté

I am trying to get back in shape after a busy busy winter. Looking towards taking the time each week to connect with nature, the sun on my skin, ans appreciate the small things like listening to a singing bird and a river flowing nearby. I feel the need to ground myself and spread my wings! Practicing yoga outside would be a great way to do so!

I am a full time athlete and student, so I want to take better care of not only my physical body, but also my mind. I have struggled with some forms of depression, so learning better ways to keep my mind healthy and strong, and not let myself fall into bad patches. To do this, I would like to find more time to meditate daily, do yoga to stretch out my over-worked muscles, and journal to get my thoughts down on paper. These are the things I would like to work on this spring to help me be a healthier, happier person!

At 52, I am a full-time student entering the bachelors program for social work. After working in a hospital environment for 22 years, my job was eliminated due to a merger and downsizing. It has been quite a challenge to be back in school at my age. I find myself staying up all night to study for exams, complete homework etc. I have completely lost the sense of any type of schedule and have neglected self-care. School is out until fall and I plan to get back to self-care, and learn to manage time better in preparation for a new school with a more disciplined curriculum. I am a perfectionist and have managed a 3.5-4.0 gpa so far. I have vowed to ease up on myself a bit with the harsh self criticism, get back to yoga and morning meditation, a gratitude list at night and to develop a manageable exercise program that I can stick with when school starts back up. I need to put all of this into a schedule that i can live by for a less stressful start to the fall semester. 🙂

My main habit I would like to change is sticking to being vegan. I’ve been trying for months, but I have way too many “cheat” days. I would also like to expand and in increase my yoga practice, adding nightly meditation to my life, to reduce stress( I’m a full-time college student)

I am in the very harmful habit of being overly hard on myself. Every day I find ways to beat myself up about something, whether it be my physical self or my abilities as a dance teacher. I want to work every day on replacing those negative things with something constructive and reminding myself of my many positive traits.

I have been reading about how plastic straws clutter up our lakes, rivers and oceans and are so bad for sea animals. I am going to keep reusable cups with me so I can get my drinks in them rather than a disposable cup and request no straws when at restaurants. I am also going to work on getting rid of the straws in the cafeteria at the school where I teach.

For me, sorting through and clearing a lot of “stuff” that has accumulated in my life is going to be the first step. I have recently been given a lot of of stuff that I didn’t/don’t need and it is weighing me down. So my plan is to go through it, take what I will use, and pass the rest on. After that . . . the sky’s the limit! 🙂

I am hoping to become less intense, “seize the moment”, to so speak. I am committed to laying the foundation, for what I hope will become a lifetime of yoga and meditation practice. I have already started with 20 mins of back rolling on a yoga wheel and just purchased some body rollers, as I realized that years of working with tight hip and leg joints was not conducive to – and had a negative impact on my progress.

I’m planning on taking some time for myself. As a mom to two young kids, I’ve given so much of myself to them over the past five years…I’ve kind of forgotten to take care of myself. Immediate goals are drinking 8 glasses of water a day and excercise. I’m also going to have one night a month I learn something new. We are all so busy in these lives if ours. Chasing kids, working, going to school, planning life. As a single momma to two fantastic boys my life is busy. I don’t mind busy but it is mostly kid busy. Sometimes I forget to stop and meditate. Im okay at it and enjoy it immensley. I generally get to it 3 times a week for about ten minutes.ive been thinking about this a lot lately actually. I am challenging myself to 30 days straight of meditation…just to stop and take that time and let my boys know that I am taking g that time for me. They can join me too. I hope to succeed at this and then add another 30 days on that 30 days.

Good luck to everyone in their new goal. Get ready, get set GO!

This spring, there are many wasteful habits I am actively working to change. For one, forgetting my reusable shopping bags in my car when I go into the store, and having to use a plastic bag when it comes time to pay. Also with the lovely weather I hope to use my bike more than my car! Mindful little changes to help reduce the amount of pollution I create c:

I just discovered what I need to change yesterday, so this post is timely! I am an artist and full time student who has been dealing with some major health issues. My art, instead of relaxing me, has left me stressed out more than anything. It helps me generate a small (but extremely helpful) amount of income, so I’ve been stressed about finishing these projects. I have kind of lost the love of simply creating and I can’t even remember the last time I created something from my heart, for me, instead of creating to solely to satisfy others’ expectations (and help me financially). I need to take a step back and let go a little bit and learn to honor my spirit more. I need to shift my perspective of this being stressful work instead of my absolute favorite thing to do in the whole wide world, as I used to see it. It’s basically time for a mental overhaul 😀

I want to plant a balcony garden soon. I once had a yard with roses that bloomed in the spring (ahh), but I’m now living the high rise life in the city, close to work. I never thought I’d miss greenery so much, but even just having a patch of planters outside the window and some kitchen herbs helped tremendously in my last 3-flat. I pledge to bring some plant life up to the 6th floor this month. Who says I can’t be a hippie in a high rise… ✌️❤️

~*YES*~ Now is the time to shed the old and foster new growth. This challenge has inspired me to revisit a few bad habits I’ve picked up this year.

Earth – Recently I find myself always in a hurry. As a result, I’ve rushed through grocery shopping and stick all of my produce in plastic bags even though I have reusable mesh ones in my drawer. For the next 30 days, I’m going to get in the habit of placing my reusable bags back in the car after I unload my groceries.

Tribe – Being “busy” also means neglecting my tribe. For 1 hour each week, I’m going to call or be fully present with someone that I love.

Self – Lately I slipped back into my old habit of worrying a lot. It’s a slippery slope…I have caught myself worrying about worrying! For the next 30 days I’m going to carry a worry stone and come back to mindfulness every time I feel my mind spinning out on “what ifs.”

Thanks Soul Flower for writing down these wise words, and good luck to all of the inspiring people who posted before me!

I’m going to doing something for me! I spend my days helping other and I sometimes forget about helping myself, so this month I plan on doing something small everyday for me, even if it’s half an hour of yoga or dinner by myself. It’s time to start celebrating me and my body ❤️

Being a stay at home mom, I find myself getting frustrated and getting upset at times, it’s hard to always maintain composure, my goal this spring is to find more strength and patience, to breathe and find gratitude when moments are tough, to find peace within when I am struggling to find peace in my situation. “Mind-yoga” can be hard but I know that with practice, love and compassion, I can find a way to be more patient and get through the tough moments. A daily yoga practice has brought me many lessons and gifts, and it has taught me to breathe and look within for wisdom and peace. And I know that with peace and love in my heart, i have it in me to be the great mother I know I can be! I may never be perfect but I will always do my best to be the best mother I can be!

This season of renewal, I will be focusing on being a more attentive mom to my toddlers. My illness sapped my energy for the last few years, so I was unable to be a “fun” mom. I will be using my new energy to teach them new things (we learned about recycling today!) and actually get to enjoy watching them learn.

My main change will be to simplify my life. Sounds easy doesn’t it?

My first goal will be to stop procrastinating and getting things done instead of avoiding the things I don’t want to deal with. Take care of things as they come along, after all it’s always TODAY, tomorrow never comes! That does require a little better planning for meals, chores, and homeschool. Kind of an oxymoron don’t you think? Plan and organize more so you can live in the now?!

My second goal is to unclutter – get rid of all things unnecessary whether it is a material thing or emotional baggage. They just take up too much room and take too much maintenance both in house and in the head!

    Wish me luck!

I am going to make my meditation top priority and actually do it every day to connect with my heart and all that is. I think it is the most important thing I can do for myself, so I must finally fully realize this and commit to it. No more procrastination! I seek for answers, but all the answers can truly be found within.

The habit I am working on shedding is watching TV in the evenings during the week. My husband and I are both teachers and we often find ourselves vegging out to reruns of The Office or New Girl during weekday evenings…not a terrible thing, but there are SO many more enriching activities available! We’ve made baby steps by actually writing “No TV” into our calendar to make shedding this habit visual! Happy Spring!

What I’m trying to change this spring is not necessarily measurable in numerical form. Rather, I’m trying to help my mental health and self esteem. I thought keeping the following things in mind would be helping in beginning the journey to working towards these goals.

1.) Don’t take criticism personally. Despite what they may think or say, you have so much to offer and are worth of the good things in your life. Don’t let them steal or diminish your glow.
2.) Treat other people with respect and genuine kindness no matter if they’re “below” or “above” you.
3.) Admit when you’re wrong. It’s less toxic than trying to prove something you don’t believe in.
4.) Apologize without expectations of forgiveness. Do it for yourself.
5.) If an environment or relationship at work doesn’t suit you, remember in your heart that you are not to blame. There is something out there that will fit with who you are.
6.) Take responsibility for your own actions and mistakes instead of blaming someone else because it’s the “easy” way out.

These are points that I had written down during a difficult time in my life with the title “What to remember for later…” Now seems like a good time to begin “later.”

My desired spring habit is to be a YES woman. If anyone offers me something to do, that is good for me, I’m going to say YES! (Do you want to go hiking? YES! Do you want to make smoothies? YES! Do you want to have a bonfire? YES!)No matter how tired or lazy I might be feeling, I’m going to say YES! I will say yes to anything that makes me healthier, happier, or gives me a new experience. (Kinda like that Jim Carrey movie, but focusing on health, happiness and social gatherings) Just today, I said yes to a rafting trip in the cold and the rain. Normally I would have backed out for a warmer day, but I said YES and want out and had a blast! 😀

This spring, some habits I choose to change are:

    – The way I react to negative situations in my life. Insteax of letting them get to me, I will look at the positives and move forward with each day.
    – To take more time to myself, and not feel guilty about it! It is time to realize that it’s okay to think about myself sometimes.
    – To speak up when I am being wronged and to not let people take advantage of me anymore, and use my kindness only for the people who need and deserve it.
    – Yoga. Every day. Just because.
    – Eat healthier, and only fuel my body with good, wholesome things, instead of the thing I can grab out of convenience. (Eventually become Paleo again.)
    – Get out into nature more. Its where I am most at peace and by immersing myself into it, I, in turn, will be more peaceful.
-Practice positive affirmations each morning before I start my day, so that I can develop a strong self-love.

I think that these are easy enough to accomplish with some hard work. I am positive in my ability to achieve these by summer.

One thing I am working on this spring is Patience. Far too many times I have pushed or tried to work through everything to get things done, whether it was within my energy or not. Right now Im expecting our 8th little miracle and had to give myself a recheck. Patience is my one goal; with myself, others and what this Universe has in store.

I am working on fixing my home’s organization problems. I used to be pretty organized and neat then I went through a time of depression after the loss of my career due to recession and my mom due to cancer and my home felt the pain of total disorganization.

This spring I want to get in the habit of spending 15 minutes a day to get organized and clean up projects. That is enough time to make an impact quickly. I’ve already changed how I approach organization and once things are in order it should be easy to maintain. Its going to make a huge difference in the mental and emotional weight I carry and the lives of my loved ones who live with me. Spending 15 minutes a day is a much stronger goal for me than working on it each day as each project is intimating, but 15 minutes seems like nothing while making an impact that adds up quickly. This why I get around the fear of the change, the intimidation of the magnitude of the problems and also actualize my activity by having a time-bound goal. I’m excited to get back to being the pre-loss me again and having space and feeling lighter.

My husband and I just packed up our life in New Hampshire and are headed across the country to Oregon! I am excited for my new life there. I will focus on being my authentic self and reaching out to others instead of waiting for them to reach out to me. My focus is on sustainability; being able to make lifestyle choices that benefit my family and the planet. We’ve recently converted to clean energy, started a garden and are raising chickens but more focus needs to be on ethical consumerism. Supporting companies that use processes and materials not harmful to the planet or our bodies.

I’m trying to stick to my creative projects and finish them instead of starting and never finishing multiple paintings, writing projects, crafts, etc. I’m also trying to let go of stuff I don’t need and scale down so it will be easier when we move. I tend to get dehydrated easily, so I’m trying to get better about hydrating myself. We are trying to start a school garden, and I want to get outside more and get more sunshine, so that should help. I get panic attacks, and I’m trying to get them under control and handle things better. I’m also trying to be more responsible and mature, and trying to find more/better ways to make a better income so that we won’t struggle to make ends meet so much, and so that we can save up for our own place and kids. I’m trying to exercise more and walk briskly for at least half an hour per day, and stick to my low-glycemic, allergen-avoiding diet better, to get healthier in preparation to have kids.

What a wonderful opportunity to key into positive energy! I really am inspired by all of us “Buds” coming together and stating what we’d like to do towards self-evolution! I am a classical musician, and my main habit that I’d like to cultivate is to embrace the aversion I feel when I attempt to begin practicing for the day. I want to allow myself to feel it, and work through it instead of procrastinating and running from it until the last possible moment.

Confessions of a first year college student in the 21st century

Having gone off to college for my first fall and winter semesters away from home, I picked up a variety of unhealthy and unsustainable habits. It’s easy to grab the pre-packaged food when it’s already paid for on a meal-plan! Choosing to over-indulge in the world of processed foods and college partying is the way to live when on campus for your first year isn’t it? Who thinks about tomorrow? Classes? Responsibility? Mother Nature? Miles from home, surrounded by hundreds of others whom are by now absorbed into social-media, instant-gratification, technology, sex, and drugs it’s easy to loose one’s self in the moment. Hind-sight being 20/20 these self-defeating-unsustainable habits I’ve developed and have become must be shed come new light.
Living on a meal-plan while attending an American college and being a vegetarian often don’t pair too well. With limited choices, and minimal nutrition it’s no wonder the start of any bad habit begins with what you eat. Starting to stuff myself glutinous with fried and processed foods as well as eating from chain sub shops every day for months begins to degrade not only oneself but ones efficacy to provide for themselves (self-sustainability). The habits of a college hobbit on auto-pilot induce far more plastic and other-wise artificial waste than the shire of a home he once came from. I no longer thought about packaging and design. Instead only cheap and over filled with sugars, carbs and salt.
Summer time is upon us! After living life through the ruts and thorns of the past academic year I’ve found myself more motivated than ever to “Lively-Up” myself and help perpetuate this Summer of Love 2016; and, by that what I mean is to help my dear second family by working on their farm this summer, volunteering once more at the Lansing Roots Farm (part of the greater Michigan Food-Bank) where I began via interning and tending to my own back-yard Eden. For these are the habits which I have chosen and for the past several weeks now remained on course building. Returning to the earth with both hands caked in its dusted layers, as well as supporting the local markets and ensuring that they are thriving with cornucopias busting at the seams with the rainbow of food to be harvested come fall. More than this, Biking and finding my footing once more amongst the roots and pebbles my feet trudge through as a hike in some of the state’s National Forests. Picking up what liter and waste can be found left behind from less mindful traveler’s hours if not days before me.
From the habits of eating, to exercise as well as bridging off into building new sustainable habits for not only myself but my state, and more importantly local community back home. Taking upon myself to see these habits through on a daily basis has been the most grounding and rewarding experience I’ve yet to experience this year. Allowing time for reflection upon the past academic hiatus and way of living which for so long had reverted into this man made cycle of consumption, over-indulgence, narcissism, and overall disconnection from the greater truth that is the world around us. Unwinding the cogs of the rat race and freeing oneself back into the heart of the people from where he once came. Its these habits that are the foundation for not only my continued self-actualization but the better health and sustainability of a greener tomorrow.
