How to Build an Indoor Fort: Bohemian Style

Are you looking for how to build an indoor fort? And even better, a hippie bohemian fort? With lots of boho hippie vibes like hippie wall hangings & cool tapestries, fairy lights, incense, patchouli and feathers? Well, we’ve all built a fort at some point in our lives (at least I hope so!) but sometimes it’s nice to think about the finer details that could make your bohemian fort even better. We recently built two indoor bohemian tents for our photoshoots and with a little planning time, ended up with some really unique fort spaces. Let us show you how to build an indoor fort, Soul Flower Hippie Boho Style!

How to Build an Indoor Fort: Prop List

I grew up antiquing with my parents, I really hated it as a teen, but now I am in LOVE, and many of the items on set came from my collection, things I’ve picked thrifting, garage sale-ing, and antiquing as an adult. Some of the things were just from around Soul Flower (we are lucky and have a pretty rad working environment). Just a few things from a craft store, I really had my heart set on those little pom-pom tassels for the kids fort and knew that I wanted to incorporate yarn for the romantic fort.

Here are a few components you will need to build your fort:

  1. A Frame – this can be large, like  the frame of a easy up tent or use tent poles. Or even a few chairs and a couch could be a frame if you plan to make your fort a little more temporary!
  2. Cool Tapestries for the walls
  3. Hippie Tapestries for the floors
  4. Pillows – we made our own out of old Soul Flower T-Shirt designs!
  5. Fairy Lights
  6. Clothespins
  7. Rope or Twine
  8. Fun Decor Extras (pom poms, yarn, tassels, feathers)
  9. More Hippy Tapestries (at Soul Flower, our tapestries give you an amazing way to brighten your space and how you use your tapestry is only as limited as your imagination!)

How to Build an Indoor Fort: Assembly

Our boho tent was a team effort really. When we were planning the theme for our catalog I instantly had visions popping in my brain and everyone had a shared vibe that we wanted to capture, so that certainly helped.  So the vision, props, textures, all the little things were a cinch, actually making a sturdy fort frame had to be drawn out. We ended up using ropes and pvc pipe but another great idea was to use the frame of a tent or tent poles. Once the basic frames were set up, we assembled the fort! If you want to know how to build an indoor fort, the keay is really just about layering on the tapestries, fabrics, enough blankets, whatever you have to create the space! I really enjoyed getting my co-workers help and thoughts, but indeed adored staying late in the empty warehouse and nit-picking the set, with no phone calls, emails, etc. to disturb me!

Layers are very important in our fort to help get the gypsy vibes. So be sure to have lots of tapestries for the floors, walls and backdrop.

How to Build an Indoor Fort: Dreamy Romantic Fort

We wanted a very dreamy, soft, cloud 9 kind of feel. We pulled this off by using neutral colors, layers of tans, whites, golds and creams. Tulle fabric does the trick, especially layered with the bright funky tapestries! The lights, big nests of Christmas lights made the set enchanting, these are a must: candles, Christmas lights, lamps, or any intimate lighting you can find will set the mood for sure!

How to Build an Indoor Fort: Kids Boho Tent for Kids

For our kids boho tent, the most important part was having interactive options, something to keep the kids occupied and entertained. In our boho tent we featured a chalk board, record player and unique kid friendly musical instruments. I would recommend having a theme, ours was clearly music, and this made it simple to gather items for the tots to explore.

Another fun thing we did was make a few small pillows using old Soul Flower T-Shirts. Our designs are perfect for kids, espeeically with messages about loving the earth and spreading a positive vibe!

Behind the Scenes: Siera + Sophia Photoshoot

There’s a common Shakespeare quote that goes, “A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.” Best friends, Siera (Soul Flower owners Mike & Peggy’s daughter) and Sophia, who were recently in for a photoshoot, are truly the embodiment of that sentiment. Franconia Photoshoot

For our most recent photoshoot, we wanted something funky, eclectic, and a little bit weird. Franconia Sculpture Park in Schafer, MN totally fit the bill. Boasting over 100 unique sculptures on 43 acres of gorgeous prairie, the hardest part was narrowing down which sculptures to feature!

“Franconia has grown from its first year, in 1996, with a negative $15k budget and no payed staff (for 4 years) to 19 years later as a nationally recognized arts organization with a 550k budget…with a staff of six and serving more than 40 artists per year and with education programs that served over 13,000 people annually.”

“All of our events are exciting. Whether it be an iron pour, a Kids Make sculpture class, our rural arts program for under-served youth, or our music in the park concert series. Last year we did a Hey Shakespeare performance of the Tempest for three nights running. The performance used the entire park as the set in stage for the play. It was really exciting.” -Hock

Soul Flower's Manifesto

Soul Flower’s Manifesto

Recently, all us buds here at Soul Flower got together, ate some insanely good pizza and talked about the things that make Soul Flower everything that it is to us. We did a bit of serious reflection, and also had quite a lot of laughs, and what came out of it was a list of almost 150 things that Soul Flower represents to us. Which is a lot! So we took that list and began to narrow it down to a few things that are truly at the heart of Soul Flower, and what came out of it was a poem we now embrace as our very own MANIFESTO! (more…)

Photo Shoot at Architectural Antiques

Photo Shoot at Architectural Antiques

This year for our spring/summer catalog we were lucky enough to spend our day shooting photos at the enthralling, easy to get “lost” in, Architectural Antiques in NE Minneapolis. Surrounded by streams of colorful light from the various stained glass windows, and an uncountable amount of antique lighting overhead, we wove our way through the aisles taking numerous photos of our upcoming spring line, which is just as enthralling as the antiques surrounding us! Apple Orchard Photoshoot

This year we were lucky enough to do our photoshoot at the Minnetonka Orchards. And to top it all off, we had perfectly warm, sunny weather, great friends and wonderful models. That we have one hell of a photographer never hurts either. (We love ya, Jenn! 🙂

Here’s a few apple orchard outtakes; a perfect fall day full of deliciously crisp, sun-warmed apples (…gosh, I could go for one now!) and tons of fun in our favorite Soul Flower fashions!

Unexpected Awesomeness: Our Catalog Cover

Have you seen our latest catalog? Publishing these catalogs is so exciting for us here at Soul Flower! We only publish two per year, so tons of time, effort, and creativity goes into each and every page. And this one is awesome.

Blog Image

Now, I won’t go spoiling the fun by showing off every single page. I just want to talk about that cover!

The inspiration for our Fall/Winter 2012 catalog cover was simple: that photo.

Our photographer Jenn took this shot during a photoshoot in Minneapolis. Our bud Maddie is the model, and she’s making her way down a green-filled path on the way to the next location. It wasn’t planned: Jenn just happened to look up and capture Maddie at that perfect moment!

Blog Image Blog Image

With luck on our side, the rest of the catalog came together smoothly. Having Maddie picked out for the cover –giving off good vibes!– really helped us put extra love into every page. It’s amazing when things just come together like that!

Blog Image

The photo is set, now what about a title? We needed something fun, funky, carefree, and totally Soul Flower. It might sound crazy, but the style of writing (or font) really affects the entire mood! (Check out this infographic for a taste of the science behind typefaces)

Blog Image

I took inspiration from the design I drew up awhile back when we printed some little Blog Image “let your soul flower” tattoos.

Blog Image

Brainstormed with a bunch of doodles…does it remind you of your old school notebook? Writing “I heart Bobby!!” and “Mrs. Brad Pitt” all over the pages? 🙂

Blog Image

And eventually landed on this:

Blog Image

Whew! I know, it seems like quite the process. The whole catalog is a labor of love for us, and we are giddy with excitement to know what you think! Drop us a line, a comment, a note– and let us know your thoughts.

So now, when you get your catalog and see the cover, you’ll know the story!

We hope it reminds you to keep your eyes open for those special moments. When you’re taking pictures of your kids or your loved ones, look up when they’re not expecting it and capture that instant of pure, honest real-ness. The best and most beautiful things are all around us, if we just look, listen, and recognize.

Remember to let your soul flower,
