We’re almost half-way between Summer Solstice (June 21) and Autumn Equinox (September 22). This time of year traditionally marks the beginning of harvest, both literally and metaphorically.
July’s full moon is also a total lunar eclipse! It will be the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century, coming in just shy of the theoretical limit. Unfortunately it won’t be visible in North America, but pretty much every other place in the world will get to see it!
This month’s full moon is also known as Thunder Moon, since thunderstorms are so frequent during July. Fun fact: some of the stormiest areas in the US can see thunderstorms every single day in July! Top of the list is southern Florida, a few places in New Mexico, and a small region in southeast Arizona. Enjoy Mother Nature’s light show, but stay safe!

Hey Buds, you know we are always looking for ways to be more eco-friendly and we are excited to say – we found a new one this season: our latest wholesale catalog (released to boutiques and shops that carry Soul Flower) is now being printed on 100% recycled papers! Our new paper is 100% post consumer recycled and approved by the FSC (Forest Steward Council). We have worked with our current printer for a few years now and have always been very impressed with their eco friendly practices throughout their facility. We are especially proud to be their first catalog printing on 100% post consumer recycled paper using eco-friendly soy-based inks.
Our recent Spring/Summer shoot took us and our model PK to Sunnyside Gardens in Minneapolis. This place has been around since 1935 – it’s the perfect combination of plants, planters, starters, gardening supplies and a grow-your-own attitude.Take a look at our behind the scenes photos and enjoy the vibe of this cool Minnesota tradition! Here’s some news that’ll brighten your day: you have the power to reduce the environmental impact of ALL your clothes, even if they’re not eco-friendly! Choosing sustainably-made garments made of fibers like organic cotton or recycled polyester is a great start. But did you know that laundering is still the largest contributor to a piece of clothing’s overall greenhouse gas footprint? Consider the total life cycle of a garment: the raw materials, manufacturing, shipping, to your at-home wear and care and ultimate disposal. What you practice at home accounts for 40-80% of the garment’s total emissions. You can make a huge difference and green up your laundry practices!
Polyester is the most common fabric in fashion today. The problem is, typical polyester is made from non-renewable petroleum and it’s energy-intensive to produce. But recycled polyester is fabric harvested from plastic that has been recycled, like plastic water and beverage bottles. The recycled polyester fabric process takes plastic bottles, cleans them, makes pellets of the recycled plastic and then melts it all into new thread. That thread is then knitted into fabric. There are many reasons why organic cotton is better than conventional cotton. Organic uses only non-genetically modified seeds and is grown without using toxic synthetic chemicals, pesticides, or fertilizers. It’s production reduces human, animal, and environmental impact. My daughter Siera and I did a mini photoshoot a few weeks ago at Greenwood Park and Salisbury House neighborhood in Des Moines. We had planned the shoot for the last week in 2017 but the subzero weather kept us inside for weeks. So on the first day that is popped above 10 degrees, we headed out for a walk in the park. I have to say, Siera was a trooper, considering how cold it was to be wearing tank tops and short sleeves!
